Skip bins are a type of dumpster that allow you to dispose of waste during a home-remodeling project or landscaping project without having to bring the waste to the dump on your own. The skip-bin company drops off your chosen skip bin and then picks it up when you're finished with it. Here are some tips to follow when using the rented skip bin.

Know How and Where to Park It

When the skip bin is delivered to you, you will need to know where to park it during the renovations. Typically, the skip bin will be placed either on the street in front of your house or in your driveway. If you have room in your driveway, that is typically preferred because it doesn't get in the way of other vehicles on the street. The problem with parking the bin on the street is that neighbours might get annoyed with it being in the way, or else service personnel for things like mail delivery and garbage collection might have issues with the bin being in the way. In this case, a permit might be required.

Learn the Technique for Loading the Bin

Loading a skip bin is pretty self-explanatory, but there are some things that can help you do this more efficiently. First of all, just like if you are packing a box, try to put the larger and heavier items at the bottom of the bin. This allows you to really make use of all the space and have a better idea of how much room is left for other waste materials. You also want to avoid filling the bin too high. The skip-bin company will request that the bin not be filled up past the walls of the bin. Otherwise, it will be hard to pick up the bin and bring it to the local dump where it needs to be emptied. Also know what can't be put into the bin, such as hazardous materials.

Keep Others from Using It

A common issue with having a skip bin is that your neighbours might think that using it is a great way to get rid of their waste as well. To avoid this from happening, make it clear that you need all the space for your own remodeling materials and that if others fill it up too much, you will have to pay extra to have it emptied and then brought back for the rest of your project. The bin should also have a lid that you can lock, so this is another way to keep others from using it. You can also store the bin in your driveway with a car parked behind it so people will be much less likely to help themselves.
