Follow the steps outlined below and you will have the grease trap in your kitchen sparkling clean in a very short time.

Step 1: Prepare the Trash Can

Put two or three trash bags inside the trash can. These trash bags or liners should be very thick so that they can withstand the weight of the grease that you will discharge into them. Place absorbent materials inside the trash bags so that liquids do not seep out.

Step 2: Open the Lid

The lids of grease traps are normally fastened with screws or other fasteners. Use a screwdriver or an Allen wrench to open those fasteners. Remember to turn the screwdriver anti-clockwise as you open the fasteners. Read the manual in case there are other components that should be disassembled once the lid is open.

Step 3: Remove the Grease Trap Contents

Use a scoop to transfer the contents of the grease trap into the trash bags that you have put into the trash can. When almost all the contents have been removed, use a scraper to remove any encrusted particles on the walls of the grease trap. Resist the urge to use hot water to remove any residual grease from the grease trap because it will melt and clog your drain when it eventually cools and solidifies.

Step 4: Inspect the Grease Trap

Inspect the grease trap carefully and identify any components that show signs of wear or damage. Order replacement parts for those components that are obviously damaged.

Step 5: Reassemble the Grease Trap

Follow the assembly procedure outlined in the manual so that you place each component in its rightful place after the cleaning process is complete. Don't force any fastener that does not slip into place easily. Remove it and try putting it back again until it fits.

Step 6: Seal the Trash Bags

Place some additional absorbent material on top of the grease trap contents that you placed inside the bags. Tie the top of the trash bags securely so that there is no chance that the contents will leak out. Cover the trash can and wait for the garbage disposal personnel to take that bag with the rest of the trash from your business.

Each jurisdiction has specific guidelines that should be followed when cleaning a grease trap. For instance, there could be a requirement for you to document the frequency of cleaning your grease trap. Adhere to all the requirements of your municipality so that you do not attract penalties for flouting area laws.

If you're still unsure about the procedure or would rather leave the work to the professionals, you can contact a local grease trap cleaning company.
